Saturday night brought us the latest Connor McDavid vs Auston Matthews matchup. It was all Toronto until the last couple of minutes as the Oilers scored two quick goals but couldn’t complete the comeback, ultimately losing 3-2. Matthews may have won this one, but McDavid didn’t go down without a fight. The Oilers’ captain was a nightmare to defend, as usual, showing off his vision with a season-best nine completed passes to the slot, netting him two assists, including this one to help cut the lead to one goal.
McDavid’s 9 slot passes weren’t just a season-best for him, it tied the league’s best performance this season. In fact, only Mitch Marner and Blake Wheeler have managed to completed nine passes to the slot in a game this season and, unsurprisingly, all three players rank top-5 in assists this year. On top of that, McDavid was his usual dominant self in many other areas, with a number of game-best performances in some of our key metrics.
The comeback ultimately fell short, but even in a losing effort, we have decided to award McDavid the Weekend Warrior Award for his outstanding play on days of the week that start by S. Can’t get much more prestigious than that.
