Last night’s Islanders vs Blackhawks game featured the NHL’s top puck possession players when it comes to owning the puck in the offensive zone. Patrick Kane has led the NHL in offensive zone puck possession for years – until last season when rookie Mat Barzal bumped him from his throne. This season, Barzal and Kane are right at the top of the list when it comes to who can hang with the puck the most in the attacking end.
Barzal and Kane did not disappoint in last night’s shootout thriller that saw the Blackhawks come out on top by a score of 3-2. Both players had well over their league-leading season averages in terms of offensive zone puck possession and total puck possession.
Barzal had the puck more than Kane but Kane got the last laugh scoring in the shootout as the Hawks picked up the extra point.
It will be another battle to the finish line to see which player, Barzal or Kane, ends up leading the NHL in offensive zone puck possession this year. One things for sure, it’s a treat watching these dynamic skaters go head-to-head, especially in overtime with all that extra ice.
