The good news for the Montreal Canadiens, they created a ton of quality scoring chances last night. The bad news, Aaron Dell was dialled in. Dialled!
Montreal attempted 28 shots from the slot – the most by a team in any game this season. Dell stopped 27 of them.
27 saves in a game is a good night’s work. 27 saves on shots from the slot alone….well, that’s something that only Dell has done this season.
From the most high-danger scoring area on the ice, the inner slot, Dell made 16 saves, again the most by a goalie in a game this season.
Add it all up and the Canadiens expected goals total last night, based on the 37 shots they put on net and the quality of those shots, was 5.1 goals. Had Dell played an average game, that should have been enough for a 5-4 Canadiens win. As we know, the Sharks won the game 4-2, largely on the back of their goalie.
Dell had one of the best goaltending performance of the season, saving his team 3.1 goals above average – the 4th best single-game mark of the season.

College kids used to love it when they heard those magic words, “Dude, you’re getting a Dell.” The Canadiens didn’t love anything about getting A. Dell in net last night.
