In a talent-laden draft, Timo Meier was taken 9th overall by the Sharks in 2015 and he’s been doing everything possible to prove the Sharks right in picking him so high.
If you’re ever trying to find Meier on the ice, just look in the slot, it’s almost guaranteed he’ll be there. After scoring 21 goals in his first full season last year, Meier is off to a scorching hot start this year, scoring 12 goals in his first 16 games. His 12 goals are tied for 1st in the league with some pretty impressive company.
8 of those goals have come from directly outside the blue paint and the other 4 were all from inside the slot. Meier parks himself in front and gets fed pucks or jumps on rebounds at a high rate, which has him tied for 6th in slot shots and tied for 8th in pass receptions in the slot.
Meier has a knack for finding the puck in net-front scrums which is a great skill to have on a team with Erik Karlsson and Brent Burns taking shots from your blue line. He uses his over-200 pound frame to get good body position on defenders and has great hand-eye coordination for tipping shots.
While I don’t expect him to score the 61 goals he’s on pace for, I think it’s safe to expect a career-high from Meier this year. Especially since he seems to relish getting to the high-danger areas.
