For the second all-Canadian matchup of opening night, the Calgary Flames face the Vancouver Canucks. In a matchup of two teams driven by talented, young forwards, Johnny Gaudreau stands head and shoulders above everyone, figuratively speaking, of course. The diminutive forward was one of the most dynamic offensive forces in the NHL last season. His ability to handle the puck is matched by very few players in the league.
This will be the first season since the turn of the millennium that neither of the Sedin twins will suit up for the Vancouver Canucks. As they turn this massive page in franchise history, many young players will be looking to help write the next chapter. Chief among them is Brock Boeser, who flirted with the 30-goal mark despite missing 20 games and was the most dangerous rookie sniper in the NHL last season.
Here’s a look at how both teams fared last season at even-strength in a number of key areas.
